Preconference Welcoming Reception at Lago Martianez

Sunday 8, June 2003

The Lago Martianez designed by famous Canarian artist Cesar Manrique, it is a vast and beautiful collection of open air salt-water pools, built right on the edge of the town on reclaimed land. This series of seawater pools forms an extraordinary spot for bathing and resting in the sun. Harmonising his architecture with the exotic vegetation of the volcanic coast Cesar Manrique created his most beautiful project.

Visit to La Laguna

Monday 9, June 2003

La Laguna is Tenerife's second most important city. It is the old Capital of the Island (until 1723) and situated just inland from Santa Cruz in the Aguere Valley amid a beautiful countryside. It is also the cultural and religious Capital, due to the fact that it lodges the San Fernando University and the Bishop's Palace. The whole city is full of outstanding architectural monuments, palaces and traditional houses of the XVII and XVIII centuries.

Among its religious buildings the most outstanding are the Cathedral, the Santo Domingo Church and the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción - this latter one has a fine Mudejár carved wooden ceiling and an exceptional Baroque wooden pulpit from the 18th century. One can also find the Church of the Holy Christ and the San Miguel Chapel.

Excursion to the National Park of Las Cañadas del Teide

Tuesday 10, June 2003

This National Park offers a fascinating landscape, created by the elementary forces of the volcano Teide. Christopher Columbus observed its last great eruption in 1492 from the nearby island Gomera, just before continuing his discovery travel to America.

With a height of 3.718 meters the Teide is not only the highest mountain of Spain, but as well the highest elevation in all the Atlantic Ocean. A cableway takes visitors up to 3.600 meters.

On clear days you have a fantastic view. But at least equally impressive is the volcano's immense crater, with a circumference of approximately 80 kilometers.

At the side of Teide there is a large flat country called Cañadas, having been used by the island's original population, the Guanches, as pastureland. Today it is covered with petrified lava having very bizarre forms. In this area exist some extremely rare species of plants, as the Guanche Rose, of which are known only some 50 exemplars worldwide, the Teide Violet and animals, in particular lizards.
